![]() I hate those flex bits, but sometimes they are a necessity, albeit an evil one IMO. Mine are just small enough to let me reach through an opening cut for a single gang box. Might have to get someone with smaller hands, if yours are too big. How far above the hole for the switch box is the 2nd (fire stop ) 2X ? If it's not too far above, I'd try reaching in to the bottom of said 2X (sounds like you'll have to pull out some insulation, ) and assess the situation on the bottom of the 2X by feel. ![]() Posted 22:12 (#3908957 - in reply to #3907645) Subject: RE: dumbest thing I did yesterday or how stuck is it? What if you pulled the bit all the way down so that the sharp end is at the bottom of the wall, and then pulled it out butt end first? Would the bend be any less sharp that way? You'd want to epoxy a light cord, beaded pull-chain, etc, to the butt end before pulling it down, so that you still have a way to pull the wires. One more thought - you said that you can't pull the bit out the switch hole because it won't bend sharp enough. I would give everything else a try first, though, obviously. ![]() I'm assuming you can reach the sharp end of the bit, since you were able to tie a wire on, right? So, worst case scenario, you cut/snap the actually cutting end off, and pull the bare shaft back through. This would help feed any splinters away from the hole, as the bit moves up into the hole. Maybe run the drill slowly in the forward (clockwise ) direction, while pulling back. You ought to be able to tighten the chuck enough to keep the bit from pulling out. Also complicating matters is, wall is lath and plaster with drywall screwed over the plaster inside nice old woodwork (to preserve wood trim ) Should say it cant go down and thru the switch hole as it wont bend that fast. Once it comes thru the bottom one I will be okay. so I am stuck between two 2 byes in a straight line. I am also thru another 2 bye in the attic as thats where the tube was and thought that would keep me straight. A 6' bit has to bend to get there to start with. No help and NOT alot of room to work on it in there. ![]() I even tried reversing the bit an run a little slow thinking i would just cut off any twisted wire. ![]() When you pull up on the drill it just pulls off the chuck. Hence my expensive new drill bit is now 'stuck' in the wall. In retrospect I probably should have run bit in and out of the hole a few times to clean her up,BUT that would risk as long as it is for it to jump out of the hole and not find it again. Also complicating this is I HAD to tie a wire on to the end of the bit to pull back because the hole would never be found otherwise down that far, buried in insulation, unable to be seen. Here is the absolute dumb move I made,as it dropped down thru the wood it must have splintered the last and splinters now spring back up preventing the "removal" of the bit. First hole I drill with it in an outside wall full of blown in insulation (harder than inside partition walls to work on ) I drilled thru an obvious 2 bye 4 horizontal fire stop or spacer half way down from the attic (where I was drilling ) to a switch box next to the front door. I bought one of those 6 FOOT long flex drill bits to snake wire in an old house (replacing VERY thin knob and tube ).
